Web Site Mystery Shopping--Is It For You?

One of the rare mystery shopping assignments you'll come across these days is a web site shop.  Let me tell you, shopping web sites can be a mystery shopper's dream come true.  There's no travel to and from your shop; you don't need anyone to watch the kids; you can do your shop in the middle of the night if you like; and for shoppers who live in small towns, this is equal opportunity mystery shopping that does not favor those who live in major markets.

I've lucked out and done a few myself either evaluating just the web site, or a web site in conjunction with a customer service call center.  These jobs were offered to me by schedulers I regularly worked with for their "in-the-field" assignments.  Pay varies widely depending on how much you are asked to do (I've been paid $10 for a very simple shop to $50 for a more complex one), but you have to keep in mind that with a shop that can be done under these terms, you can afford to take on one that has a lower fee than the typical "outside" shop.

Every company is different, but generally you are being paid to determine how user-friendly the site is, and to see if you get helpful and timely responses from on-line customer service or sales personnel.  There may be a simple check-off form or a narrative summary of your site visit required.

I was intrigued when Tema Frank, President of a new company, Web Mystery Shoppers contacted me about their work.  Tema's company is completely devoted to helping companies make the most of their web sites by getting objective feedback from professional mystery shoppers.  Since Web Mystery Shoppers is just getting started, you won't get a steady stream of assignments from them just yet.  And don't expect to make your living just doing web mystery shops.

Tema is actively looking for shoppers--and get this--especially Canadian shoppers--to sign up and learn their system so they will be ready to jump in as assignments are received.  They have assignments that are open to shoppers on both sides of the border regardless of where the client company is based.
