3 Tips For Mystery Shoppers
With Some Experience

By Melanie Jordan, author of The Perfect Work-At-Home Job:
Mystery Shopping, How-To Finally Make Money As A Mystery Shopper and

1.  Be constantly on the lookout for ways to improve your efficiency--whether it involves the way you look for work (and if you do things right, you should rarely need to look for work, it will come to you); the way you schedule and conduct your shops; how you organize yourself; and how you handle reporting.  You can always find a way to do something better which translates into more time for shops and more income.

2. Get more selective in your assignments.  You should stop taking lower-paying shops (except under certain circumstances), limit your travel more and don't be afraid to stop accepting assignments from companies that you don't enjoy working with or are slow to pay.  For example, I do a lot of apartment shops, and I stopped working with one company in my market area that was not paying enough for their assignments and was a pain in the neck to deal with.  Life is too short, and there are too many other great companies to work with.

3.  If you aren't already, you've got to get focused on the service shops, technology-based shops (audio and video) and dinner restaurant shops.  Service category shops include apartments, homebuilders, office suites, gyms, car dealers, oil changes, testing centers and financial services.  The pay for service category assignments should be at least $20 to $25 and up to $50; dinner restaurant shops can pay from $25 to $100 (in reimbursement including a token shop fee of $5 to $10 where offered); and audio and video mystery shops can pay up to $50 and $100 apiece, respectively.
